Mid-Level Litigation Attorney (Municipal Law)

About Us: Jarvis Fay is a California local government law firm trusted by public agencies statewide on high-stakes municipal matters. In addition to general counsel engagements, the firm is known for defending municipal revenue issues (including Proposition 218/26), guiding agencies through complex CEQA and land use/entitlement projects, and advising on public contracting disputes. Jarvis Fay attorneys are recognized leaders in the field, including consistent Super Lawyers selections and frequent speaking and leadership roles with organizations such as the League of California Cities and the California Special Districts Association.

The Role: Jarvis Fay is seeking a mid-level litigation attorney (5 to 7 years preferred, flexible based on fit) to support our municipal and public law litigation practice. The position offers the opportunity to work on cutting-edge legal issues affecting public agencies. Our litigation work includes class action defense, writ and mandamus proceedings, and administrative hearings. The ideal candidate will have experience with, or a strong interest in learning, municipal revenue issues including the Mitigation Fee Act and Propositions 218 and 26.

Requirements: This role is focused on research, writing, and advocacy in motion practice and hearings. We are looking for someone with strong research and writing skills and the ability to approach legal questions creatively and critically. Role expectations will depend on experience and qualifications. California Bar admission is required.

Our Firm: Our firm is located in downtown Oakland near BART. We also accommodate remote work and hybrid arrangements. Bay Area presence is preferred but not required, and attorneys should be able to appear in person when case needs require. We maintain a relaxed and friendly atmosphere while requiring a high level of professionalism.

Compensation: Base salary for an attorney with 5 to 7 years’ experience is $165,000 to $200,000 tied to an annual billing target of 1,500 hours per year (equivalent to a salary of $198,000 to $240,000 for a billing target of 1,800 hours). We offer a guaranteed pro rata bonus for each hour billed above the target. Additional benefits and professional development opportunities are available. Hours target and salary are negotiable depending on experience.

Applications: To apply, please submit a resume, a cover letter/email (optional), two or three references, and at least one writing sample demonstrating objective legal analysis (such as an issue memo) or persuasive legal advocacy (such as a brief) to jarvis.fay@jarvisfay.com. Applicants who have both objective and persuasive samples are encouraged to submit one of each.

Contact: Email questions to jarvis.fay@jarvisfay.com.
Jarvis Fay is an equal opportunity employer. Unsolicited submissions by search firms will be deemed not accepted, and the firm will not be obligated to pay a placement fee for such submissions.
